How to Handle Your Family When They Say You Are Crazy
October 18th, 2010
It’s hard enough reaching for your dreams when your friends or acquaintances continue to say something negative about them and discourage you from doing so. But what do you do if the negative person whispering in your ear is a family member?
It’s not an easy predicament. When you’re aiming for something your heart wants more than anything, you need as much positive reinforcement as possible. The last thing you want to hear is your mother, brother, uncle or grandmother laughing at your dreams and saying, “You’re only dreaming.” But it happens from time to time. It’s happened to some of the most successful people in the world. Instead of thinking of it as a burden, why not think of it as fuel to achieve your life’s desires?
The next time someone in your family says something negative, walk away, close your eyes and smile. I want you to think about the day when you’ll walk right up to them after you’ve accomplished your dream show them. By no means do I want you to rub it in their face — they will already be well aware that you’ve accomplished it. Sometimes, they will say something to the effect of, “Oh, I knew you could do it all along.” That’s perfectly fine. Thank them, because without their resistance you may not have had the drive to accomplish your dream.

Nik- I know you’re talking to adults but it should be noted that, as an adult, you need to be aware of children and their dreams. Don’t discourage them or tell them they will never accomplish what they want. For one thing, they will probably change their minds 100 times before they settle on something but most important is not to crush them and teach them not to dream big. They learn from us, you know.

I love your humility, Nik. Yes, it is better to use the resistance as fuel to drive you to complete your goals. And as Ridgely says, it is better to go around something than to try to go through it.
