I love watching wildlife. It’s so beautiful to me. But have you ever thought about what you can learn from it? We are humans and we often think of ourselves as the most advanced species, but are we really?

Here we are destroying our earth with chemicals and greed. We damage people’s lives with our anger and our words with no thought of how it will affect the world around us.

Yes, nature kills, but only enough for it to eat, or to defend itself and its extended family. They take the time to rest and to play, even the ferocious lion. They taste and enjoy the fruit of the land. They do not sit and suffer; they work every day to build their homes and provide for their children. They do not take more than they need. As one animal dies, another animal will gather their remains so that their children can survive. Every being on earth has its purpose, everyone fulfills its role.

Ponder that today as you are going through your busy day and think about what you can learn from wildlife.

Have you ever taken the time to listen to an elderly person? I mean, really listen? I love hearing their stories of triumph and tragedy, pain and love. They have so much experience, that if we’d only take the time to listen, we could probably save ourselves a lot of grief.

It’s easy to view an elderly person we pass on the street as someone who drives too slowly or who is in our way. But they have so much to share and so much to give us if we’d only take the time.

The truth is, yes, they were young at one time and they had the same fears and hopes and dreams as we all do who are much younger than they are now. They have regrets and they can tell us what they would do all over again if they could. That’s something we could all learn from.

So, the next time you see an elderly person, think about taking the time to sit down and talk to them. Sit, listen and learn. You might be amazed at the wisdom they can share.

Can you imagine how hard Rosa Parks’ heart must have been beating when she decided not to give up her seat on the bus to a white person?

She was a civil rights activist who fought for the rights of the African Americans in America and is considered to be a “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement.”  Her grit and determination are the two virtues that took her in the path of being worthy to society.

She lived at a time when African Americans were viewed as less than others but she stood up — or more appropriately, sat down for what she believed. She had had enough — and sometimes it takes just that. We’re backed up into a corner and we have no other choice but to stand up and fight. We have to take a stand. Sometimes we wonder why bad things may happen to us, or in my opinion, why we’ve allowed those things into our lives. But sometimes we do so because we need that strength to stand up.

We can all learn to fight against all odds by being brave and having the self confidence to stand for justice. This lady had the power to stand against the oppressive rules of the American society. Her strength is something we can ALL learn from.

Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. This is a guy who had to work many different jobs long before becoming an astronaut — yet he went down in history. He was not the son of a king or corporate CEO. He was an average man with great dreams and determination to carry them out.

It goes to show that we can all do great things — no matter how humble our backgrounds may be.  Anything is possible.

Armstrong was always interested in planes and flying. In fact, he built a wind tunnel in the basement of his home. Not only did he dream, but he made his dreams come true by believing in himself. What are you doing right now to accomplish your dreams?

Believe in yourself, have faith in your abilities. Never allow yourself to be a victim of circumstances and never allow your circumstances to dominate your life path. Great men and great women are no different, they are just like you and I. We all eat and put our pants on one leg at a time. The only difference between those we deem to have accomplished great things is that they kept going until they reached their goals. There’s no reason why we cannot be one of them.

Mother Teresa is a living example that you’re never too old and that it’s never too late to make a difference in the world. She kept going and going — giving and giving until she could give no more. And yet, even though she is no longer with us physically, her spiritual impact still affects our lives today.

The life of Mother Teresa is not unknown to us — what has remained out of the public eye is the lesson that we can learn from her life. Mother Teresa is a figure who changed the world with love and compassion. She taught people that hatred can only be won over by love and that we can all bring positive change to our society. This wonderful lady showered selfless service to the poor and deprived up until her very last breath. Go forth and walk in her footsteps — just for one day. You will see how much of a difference it will make and the lives that it will impact.

This week, we will take a look at Dr. Martin Luther King — a man that changed the world forever. He was not born rich or privileged. In fact, he was born in a time that some people thought African Americans were second or third class citizens.

He looked beyond what others may have thought of him and had a vision. He had a plan for a world in which everyone in the United States would be treated equal. He had a vision for a time when the country could have a president that was a person of color. And you know what? His dream came true.

He had death threats against not only himself but his family members. He had pressure from those of his own race who begged him to give up because their world was becoming more difficult. He had internal demons and doubts, yet he kept going. Why? Because he had to, he had a purpose greater than his own. A purpose that had to be fulfilled…and he fulfilled it.

We can do the same. What purpose, what desire do you have, that is greater than your own? What can you do and more importantly what are you doing to accomplish it NOW?

If anyone had a challenge in life it was Helen Keller, who was both deaf and blind. She is an example of someone who overcame insurmountable odds to make a difference. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be to not see or hear? And you thought you had problems, right?

Yet, if she could make it, then dare I say, anyone can. We are all blessed with so many gifts. Most importantly, we’re alive! Yes, we have the gift of life — just wake up and look around you. There is so much beauty in the world — even a crummy old building may have beautiful architecture. There’s something very positive about everything that surrounds you.

The world is filled with blessings. We need only to open our eyes and realize it. When you see people who have had so many difficulties, who are in pain or who have nothing to eat, we realize how much we truly have. Your assignment today is to open your eyes and think about one thing you have that you are eternally grateful for.

If you don’t know a lot about Ghandi, I invite you to do some research on him — he was quite an amazing man. However, up until he became well known, many people believed the only way you could really change the world or stand up to oppression was through war. Ghandi proved that the REAL change can be made in more subtle, peaceful ways.

Sometimes we may walk into a business meeting, or an engagement with a loved one, expecting a conflict. We go into the situation with a certain attitude and decision that we are expecting some sort of altercation — and in the end we end up getting exactly what we expected. If we were to approach the interaction with the attitude that we’re going to get what we want because that person is on our side, then he or she is much more willing to cooperate with us. It is proven that a peaceful approach is much more effective than an abrasive one. As the old saying goes, “You attract more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” No one knew this more than Ghandi himself.

Abraham Lincoln is one of the best examples in United States history of a man who defied all obstacles in life and never quit. For him, each failure was a stepping stone to success. Being born in poverty, he faced defeat throughout his life — however he was never deterred by that defeat. He emerged to become one of the greatest Presidents in world history and is still fondly remembered today.

Here was a man who was faced with a pertinent decision. He knew it was wrong to keep slaves and to treat people like cattle. “All men are created equal” — he believed that more than anything else. He, and many others, were willing to risk their lives to fight for what they believed in.

There are times in our lives when we have difficult decisions; decisions that could very well affect other people’s lives as well. But they are decisions that have to be made. We’ve all faced them before and if you haven’t yet, you soon will. At the end of the day, you must have integrity; you have to stand up for what’s right because if you find yourself justifying what you’re doing, perhaps there’s a reason for it. Perhaps you haven’t made the right decision.

Abraham Lincoln’s spirit kept him going. His integrity, spirit and his decision have affected our lives to this day.
